Lisa is the founder of the Casimir Jones Life Sciences Patent Academy, a pioneering, free educational initiative designed to open doors for diverse life science professionals interested in careers in patent law. This 15-week virtual program delivers targeted, hands-on legal training through expert-led online classes, practical assignments, and direct mentorship.

The Patent Academy introduces graduate students, postdocs, and science professionals to the fundamentals of patent law and application drafting, tailoring content to those seeking meaningful career alternatives outside of laboratory research. The curriculum is split into three carefully crafted phases:

What is the Casimir Jones Patent Academy?

Patent Basics:

Provides the fundamentals of patent law and claim drafting techniques

Patent Drafting:

Provides experience in drafting a life science patent application from beginning to end

Patent Prosecution:

Provides experience in formulating patent prosecution strategy and responding Office Actions from the USPTO

Classes are hosted by Lisa Mueller and her colleague, Jeff Childers, and take place twice a week in the evenings to accommodate the schedules of working professionals. All sessions are recorded for flexible, global participation.

Requirements:

To enroll, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Have or are obtaining a bachelors, masters, or Ph.D. degree in one or more of: agriculture, biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, biotechnology, botany, cellular biology, developmental biology, immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, genetics, neuroscience, organic or medicinal chemistry, an MD. degree in medicine or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university; and

  • Is able and willing to commit to every scheduled class in the selected course.
